The Inaugural
Costa Maya
Folk ~ n~ Blues
Music FiesTa~Val
Thanks largely to serendipity
(and a last minute Brasilian Visa snafu on the part of the headliner)
an opportunistic Xcalak resident scrambled on short notice to
bring together the necessary elements to pull off a
Night of Acoustic Folk & Blues Music
in the sleepy little fishing village of Xcalak.

Hosted by
The Leaky Palapa, Xcalak´s most charming restaurant & night spot,
Colorado Bluesman Johnny Ohnmacht, founder of the Johnny O Band,
graciously interupted his vacation to play his heart out to a room full of
happy & appreciative local characters on a borrowed guitar.
Johnny O really worked the room, playing 2 lengthy sets
comprised mostly of his own
original soulful blues compositions
with a few familiar folk/rock standards mixed in.

Included were covers of such diverse artists as Van Morrison,  Lowell George,
Robbie Robertson, and particularly appropriate to this setting Jerry Jeff Walker´s
"Just Another Gringo in Belize"
But the highlight of the evening
to this seriously
live-music-challenged audience
was when Johnny improvised with a

Tequila shot glass

as a slide tool to rip off some
authentic sizzlin' blues slide guitar

inspiring more than a few of the
Local Locos
to get off their nalgas and onto the
Dance floor.

All in all, it was a Good Good Day
in Xcalak !
